St Margaret of Antioch Church of England church has stood on the corner of Argyll Street and Walsgrave Road, Ball Hill since 29 January 1910 when the foundation stone was laid. It was opened in 1911.
St. Margaret of Antioch WAS a 4th-century martyr known for her legendary escape from a dragon's belly, making her a patron saint of childbirth.
The church was established to serve the growing local community, and before its construction, services were held at the nearby Coronet Works (later Humber Works) on the corner of Far Gosford Street and Paynes Lane.
The church serves the local Coventry community especially on Ball Hill with Anglican services, and groups for all ages, particularly families which seems quite fitting. There are weekly CofE services every Sunday including a Sunday Club for children and young people..
There used to be gates at the 3 entrances, but in the 2nd World War the metal was taken for the war effort. There was some damage to the church during air raids in WW2 and the church was later restored in 1954.
It runs Stay & Play on Monday mornings for parents and carers with babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers. They play, chat, eat toast & jam (free of charge) and sing nursery rhymes. The group provides much needed support for parents. The church also runs Messy Church on the first Friday of the month, for families to come together after school to enjoy crafts, Lego, fun activities, songs, story, prayers and a nutritious family tea-meal (free of charge) together. There are summer holiday and Christmas events. Also a Light Party for families around 31 October.
The church ran an indoor Live Animal Nativity on 22 December 2025 with a real live camel, donkey, sheep, and other animals, plus Santa Claus. Food packs were provided for families and individuals amongst the 250 people who booked in.
The church also runs other groups, such as a Small Group Pilgrim Course on Wednesday mornings for people to learn about Christianity if they wish to.
On Monday 23 March 2026 Destination Ball Hill Community Hub was launched in the south aisle of the church, opened by Deputy Lord Lieutenant Pauline Black of the Selector fame, and the Lord Mayor of Coventry Rachel Lancaster. Harmony family Hub will attend the Community Hub weekly at the same time as Stay & Play to provide support. They attended the launch with ten other support organisations including Clothing Coventry, 3Ps Parenting assistance, Coventry Credit Union, NHS, and the church is also a Foodbank referral agency.
There is a gardening group that comes together combining church members and Destination Ball Hill who have recently launched their Community Hub at St Margaret’s. The gardening group has developed the overrun garden beds on the north side with vegetables and bright colourful flowers to attract the bees. There are plans to develop the garden in the south side of the church as a community garden too. See photos below.
